One very good option (and not because it's free!!!) is the Mersey side Maritime Museum, where the top attractions are the displays on emigrants to a new world and the WWII Battle of the Atlantic . What I liked most was the fascinating Transatlantic Slave Gallery. It's open till 5 pm every day if you decide to check it out.
